Union Home Minister Amit Shah is visiting Tamil Nadu on January 4th and 5th, 2026, in a move to bolster the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) presence in the state ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. This two-day visit includes participation in key BJP programs and meetings with alliance leaders.

Shah's itinerary includes addressing the valedictory function of BJP state chief Nainar Nagenthran's state-wide political campaign in Pudukkottai. The event is expected to draw a large crowd, with arrangements being made to accommodate approximately 50,000 attendees. Nagenthran's campaign, which commenced in October, is themed 'Tamilagam Thalai Nimira Tamilanin Payanam' (A Tamil's journey to ensure Tamil Nadu holds its head in pride) and targets the ruling DMK.

In addition to the political event, Shah will participate in a "Modi Pongal" celebration organized by the BJP district unit. He is also scheduled to visit the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam on January 5.

Sources indicate that Shah's visit aims to solidify the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Tamil Nadu. Consultations with leaders of NDA parties, particularly AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, are anticipated during the visit. These discussions are crucial, especially considering the emergence of actor Vijay's political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which has attracted some regional leaders, including those from AIADMK.

The BJP is reportedly seeking a significant number of seats, potentially around 40, from the AIADMK for the upcoming elections. Shah's visit is expected to provide clarity on the final composition of the NDA in Tamil Nadu, especially with other parties like DMDK and PMK yet to明确明确 their stance.
