The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its criticism of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of stealing documents from a government agency during a raid by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The ED conducted searches at the Salt Lake office of I-PAC, a political consultancy firm, and the residence of its director, Pratik Jain.
Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad described Banerjee's actions as "unethical, irresponsible, and unconstitutional," stating that she obstructed a central agency's probe and snatched documents from the location. Visuals showed Banerjee leaving the raid site with a laptop, a green folder, and other materials. The BJP is questioning what Banerjee is trying to hide. Swapan Dasgupta, a BJP ideologue, said that Banerjee is wilfully putting herself above the Constitution and rule of law by removing documents from an office being searched by the ED. Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the Bengal Assembly, demanded that the ED file an FIR against Banerjee.
Banerjee has retaliated, accusing the ED of attempting to steal her party's internal documents, hard disks, and confidential organizational data unrelated to any financial investigation. She alleges that the agency was trying to seize sensitive political data, including internal party strategy documents, candidate lists, and campaign material belonging to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), as well as files used by I-PAC in its work with her party. Banerjee has accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of misusing central agencies to target TMC ahead of elections and "stealing" the Trinamool's election strategy. She has also drawn parallels to the Watergate scandal, accusing Shah of stealing her party's election documents via the central probe agency.
The ED insists that the raid was carried out based on credible evidence related to a case of coal smuggling and hawala transactions and had nothing to do with elections or targeting any political party. The agency stated that Banerjee misused her authority as a person holding a constitutional post to take away files. The ED has moved the Calcutta High Court against Banerjee's actions.
TMC leaders and supporters have protested against the ED raids, accusing the BJP-led central government of misusing central agencies for political vendetta. TMC MPs staged a protest outside Amit Shah's office in Delhi, and Banerjee has called for demonstrations against the BJP's "blatant misuse of central agencies" and an "assault on democracy". Banerjee has instructed party members to protest at the Election Commission office. The TMC also alleges that the BJP is scripting the ED's actions, pointing to the timing of the raids after Abhishek Banerjee's rallies.
