Kallakurichi Helium Cylinder Explosion: Tragedy Strikes Tamil Nadu, Leaving One Dead and Many Injured.

Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu: A helium cylinder explosion during the Thenpennai River Festival in Manalurpettai, Kallakurichi district, has resulted in one death and at least 18 injuries. The incident occurred on Monday evening, amidst celebrations marking the end of the five-day Pongal festivities.

The deceased has been identified as a 50-year-old woman named Kala. According to police reports, the cylinder exploded around 7:30 p.m. Kala's legs were severed due to the impact of the explosion, and she was pronounced dead upon arrival at Tiruvannamalai Government Medical College and Hospital.

Many of the injured were found on the road and were immediately transported to Tiruvannamalai for medical attention. District Superintendent of Police S. Aravind reported that six of the injured individuals have been admitted to the intensive care unit. A young boy and the cylinder operator are in critical condition. Initial reports indicated 12 injuries, but this number has since risen to 18.

District Collector M.S. Prasanth confirmed the fatality and stated that the cause of the explosion is under investigation. Police have registered a case related to the incident, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the blast. Preliminary investigations suggest that the explosion occurred while helium gas was being filled into balloons used by children.

The impact of the explosion caused panic in the area, with many people sustaining burn injuries and impact wounds. Eyewitness accounts suggest that those in close proximity to the cylinder were most affected, while those further away escaped unharmed. Police and rescue personnel arrived at the scene promptly, and with the help of local residents and emergency services, the injured were transported to nearby government hospitals. The accident site has been secured by police, who have initiated relief and safety measures.

While helium is not considered flammable, sources indicate that the cylinder may have exploded due to excessive pressure. Officials have stated that further details will be available after a thorough investigation. The incident has cast a pall over the local community and raised concerns regarding safety protocols at the festival.
