Nitin Nabin formally took charge as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, marking a generational shift in the party's leadership. The 45-year-old leader is the youngest individual to hold the top post in the BJP.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present at the ceremony held at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, along with other senior leaders including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and outgoing BJP president JP Nadda. Modi congratulated Nabin on assuming the role, stating, "I congratulate Nitin Nabin for becoming president of BJP, world's largest political party". In a lighter vein, he added, "He is my boss now," acknowledging the party's organizational hierarchy.

PM Modi also recognized the contributions of previous BJP presidents in strengthening the party and highlighted the BJP's democratic internal election process. He described Nabin as a "millennial" leader who has witnessed significant changes in India's economic and technological landscape. "Nitin ji himself is, in a way, a millennial. He belongs to a generation that has witnessed a great deal of change in India. He belongs to an era which, in childhood, heard the news on the radio and today is well versed in using AI,” Modi said.

Nabin's election to the post was unopposed, with his nomination being the only one received during the organizational election. PM Modi, along with other senior leaders such as JP Nadda, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and Nitin Gadkari, had proposed his candidature. Prior to this, Nabin served as the BJP's working president since December 2025, succeeding JP Nadda.

Nabin's political journey includes being a five-time MLA from the Bankipur Assembly Constituency in Bihar. He has a reputation for winning elections by substantial margins. His role as BJP co-in charge for the 2023 Chhattisgarh Assembly elections, where the party secured a significant victory, drew the attention of the central leadership.

Nadda congratulated Nabin on his new role, stating, "You (Nitin Nabin) have taken on the responsibility as the 12th National President of such a great party. Many congratulations and best wishes to you".

Nabin's assumption of the BJP presidency is seen as a move towards a generational shift within the party as it prepares for upcoming state elections and looks towards the future. Before formally taking charge, Nabin visited several religious sites in Delhi, accompanied by Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva and Delhi Minister Parvesh Saheb Singh Verma. He has also been granted Z-category security by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, based on an Intelligence Bureau threat perception report.
