Stalin criticizes Governor Ravi: Exploring the necessity of a state governor and respecting assembly powers.

Tensions escalated in Tamil Nadu's Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, as Governor R.N. Ravi walked out before delivering his customary address, marking the third consecutive year of such incidents. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin responded sharply, accusing Ravi of "disrespecting" the House and disregarding the sentiments of the Tamil people.

The controversy began with a disagreement over the order of anthems. Governor Ravi insisted that the National Anthem be played at the beginning of the session, replacing the traditional Tamil Thai Vaazhthu (the state anthem). Speaker M. Appavu, however, adhered to protocol, starting with the state anthem and planning to conclude with the National Anthem. This difference in opinion led to the Governor's walkout before delivering his address.

Following the Governor's departure, Chief Minister Stalin moved a resolution to have the government-prepared speech recorded as "delivered," despite Ravi's refusal to read it. Stalin criticized Ravi for acting against constitutional protocols and conducting a "malicious campaign" against the elected government. He further stated that the Governor’s actions were against Assembly protocols. Quoting C.N. Annadurai, a DMK founder, Stalin stated, "A goat doesn't need a beard, and a state doesn't need a governor: these words ring true once more today".

Raj Bhavan defended Governor Ravi's actions, alleging that his microphone was repeatedly switched off and that he was not allowed to speak. A statement released by the Governor's office, now called Lok Bhavan, claimed the speech contained "numerous unsubstantiated claims and misleading statements". Ravi's office also stated that the National Anthem was not given due respect.

The opposition party AIADMK staged a walkout from the Assembly, protesting against the ruling DMK-led State government, citing deteriorating law and order in Tamil Nadu.

This incident is the latest in a series of disagreements between the Tamil Nadu government and Governor Ravi. Tensions have been simmering for some time, with the Chief Minister accusing Ravi of continuously insulting the people of the state. In previous years, 2023 and 2024, Ravi also did not fully read out the address in the House. The Governor has also publicly criticized the state government, undermining its authority.
