Caicedo's Solo Goal Propels Chelsea to Narrow Champions League Victory Over Pafos at Stamford Bridge

Moises Caicedo's late header secured a 1-0 victory for Chelsea against a resilient Pafos side at Stamford Bridge in Wednesday's Champions League match. The narrow win moves Chelsea into eighth position in the league phase table.

The Blues dominated possession from the kickoff, but struggled to break down the Cypriot champions' defense. Chelsea's new manager, Liam Rosenior, made six changes to the starting lineup, including Filip Jorgensen in goal and a fresh defense consisting of Malo Gusto, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, and Jorrel Hato. Reece James joined Caicedo in midfield, while Enzo Fernandez played in a more advanced role. Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho retained their places on the flanks, with Liam Delap leading the attack.

Chelsea thought they had taken the lead in the 17th minute when Enzo Fernandez headed in a cross from Neto, but the referee disallowed the goal for a push by the Argentine. Pafos nearly scored when Jaja's shot deflected off James and hit the post.

Chelsea continued to press in the second half, with Estevao's volley testing Pafos goalkeeper Jay Gorter. Gorter also denied Caicedo on multiple occasions. Just as Chelsea's frustration grew, they finally broke the deadlock in the 78th minute. Neto's corner was flicked on by Badiashile, and Caicedo headed home from close range. It was Caicedo's sixth goal of the season.

"It was a very important goal for the team so I'm so happy because the game was so tough. The team was good,” Caicedo told TNT Sports after the game.

Pafos, with a squad market value significantly lower than Chelsea's, defended resolutely throughout the match. Former Chelsea defender David Luiz featured for the Cypriot side, returning to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are now unbeaten in 15 home Champions League group or league-stage games. This victory marked Liam Rosenior's first Champions League game in charge of Chelsea. The win puts Chelsea in a stronger position to secure a place in the Champions League's last 16. If Chelsea overcome Napoli next week, they will automatically secure a place in the Round of 16.
