Kazakhstan jails Champions League fans for Borat-inspired antics, sparking controversy and raising questions about free expression.

Three Club Brugge fans have been jailed in Kazakhstan for five days after dressing up in 'mankinis' resembling those worn by the fictional character Borat, during their team's Champions League match against Kairat Almaty on Tuesday. The supporters were arrested for displaying disrespect and disrupting public order during the match in Astana.

Videos circulating online showed the Belgian fans in the stands changing into green swimsuits similar to those donned by Sacha Baron Cohen's character in the movie "Borat". The Astana police department confirmed the detention, stating that the fans were taken to a police station after committing actions expressing disrespect towards others.

Administrative proceedings were initiated against the fans for appearing in public while intoxicated and for minor hooliganism. The case materials have been submitted to the court for a final decision, and the offenders were placed in a temporary detention facility.

In the film "Borat," Sacha Baron Cohen portrays a Kazakh television journalist who presents the country in a negative and stereotypical light during his travels abroad. The Borat character has been a source of controversy and sensitivity for some Kazakhs, who view the film as a misrepresentation of their culture and nation.

This isn't the first incident involving Borat-related imagery at a football match in Kazakhstan. In the previous season, during a match between London club Chelsea and a Kazakh team, a fan brought a flag featuring the Borat character into the stadium, which was later confiscated by police in Almaty.

The recent match between Kairat and Club Brugge ended in a 4-1 victory for the Belgian side. However, the focus shifted from the game to the actions of these fans and the subsequent legal repercussions. The incident has sparked discussions about cultural sensitivity and the boundaries of acceptable behavior at sporting events in Kazakhstan.
