A dominant second-half performance, highlighted by goals from Beth Mead and Mariona Caldentey, saw Arsenal secure a crucial 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Women's Super League (WSL) on Saturday. This win not only marked Arsenal's first away victory against Chelsea in eight years but also significantly dented the reigning champions' hopes of securing their seventh consecutive WSL title.
The victory moves Arsenal within a point of Chelsea in the WSL standings. Chelsea now sit six points behind league leaders Manchester City, who have a chance to extend their lead to nine points when they play London City Lionesses on Sunday.
Arsenal, despite missing key players such as Leah Williamson and Chloe Kelly due to injury, and Olivia Smith due to suspension, displayed resilience and tactical prowess. The first half saw Arsenal dominate possession, but they struggled to convert their advantage into goals against Chelsea's strong defensive trio of Lucy Bronze, Naomi Girma, and Millie Bright.
The deadlock was broken in the 55th minute when Alessia Russo fed Mead, who unleashed a powerful shot across the face of the goal, leaving Chelsea's keeper, Hannah Hampton, with no chance. This was followed six minutes later by a second goal, with Mead turning provider to set up Caldentey, who expertly shifted the ball before drilling it past Hampton.
Chelsea's Lucy Bronze acknowledged Arsenal's clinical finishing, stating that Arsenal were simply more clinical with the chances that they had. She also mentioned the team's fatigue after their midweek win against Manchester City.
Arsenal's coach, Renée Slegers, had emphasized the need to get "the final thing" right before the game, and her team responded emphatically in the second half. Arsenal displayed their title credentials with a well-deserved victory. This victory was Arsenal's first away league win against Chelsea since October 2018.
