Fernandes and Bowen shine as West Ham secures crucial victory over Sunderland, boosting their chances of avoiding relegation.

West Ham United took a significant step towards Premier League survival with a dominant 3-1 victory over Sunderland at the London Stadium on Saturday. Fueled by first-half goals from Crysencio Summerville, Jarrod Bowen, and Mateus Fernandes, the Hammers secured consecutive league wins for only the second time this season.

The victory moves West Ham to 18th in the league table, just two points behind Nottingham Forest who sit in 17th, the finalposition outside of the relegation zone. Forest will play against Brentford on Sunday. Sunderland, meanwhile, remain in ninth position.

West Ham's manager, Nuno Espírito Santo, saw his game plan executed perfectly in the first half, as his team pinned back Sunderland. The home side opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Summerville headed home an inch-perfect cross from Bowen. Bowen then doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 28th minute after Ollie Scarles was fouled by Trai Hume. Mateus Fernandes then added a third with a stunning strike from 25 yards out, leaving Sunderland with a mountain to climb.

In the second half, Sunderland managed to pull one back in the 66th minute through Brian Brobbey, who headed in a cross from Nordi Mukiele. However, it proved to be just a consolation goal as West Ham comfortably saw out the remainder of the match.

Jarrod Bowen continued his excellent form, as he assisted Summerville's opener and scored a penalty. With his assist, Bowen now has the outright most league goal involvements (103) for West Ham, overtaking Michael Antonio, who had 101. He has also scored and assisted in 11 different league games, the most of any player in the club's history. Matheus Fernandes was awarded player of the match.

West Ham will face Chelsea in their next league game next Saturday. Sunderland will host Burnley in their next match.
