West Ham United manager Nuno Espírito Santo believes that the team still needs to bolster its squad during the transfer market. Nuno, who took charge of West Ham on September 27, 2025, after a swift move following the sacking of Graham Potter, has signed a three-year contract with the Hammers.
Nuno's appointment came after a disappointing run for West Ham, with only six wins in 25 matches under Potter last season. Despite investing £126 million after selling Mohammed Kudus, the team struggled, losing five of their first six matches and dropping to 19th in the league.
The January transfer window could be a busy period for West Ham as Nuno aims to make his mark on the team. The club may look to bring in reinforcements, while also potentially seeing the departure of some current players. Niclas Fullkrug, the towering German striker, has struggled to find his form at the London Stadium and may be on his way out, with AC Milan reportedly interested.
Nuno seems to be keen on a particular type of striker. In his first game as West Ham manager, he played Nicholas Fkrug for the entire match, signaling that he favors a "big striker". This preference echoes his successful utilization of Chris Wood during his time at Nottingham Forest.
One potential target for West Ham is Mateo Pellegrino, an Argentine forward from Parma. Pellegrino, who is the son of manager Mauricio Pellegrino, is a tall and physical striker who could be available for around €15 million in January. However, West Ham faces competition from Tottenham and Nottingham Forest for his signature.
Furthermore, West Ham is reportedly targeting Jose Sa, a goalkeeper from Nuno's old club, as competition for Alphonse Areola. Sa, who has been playing in the Premier League for the last four years, recently lost his starting place and could be a solid backup option.
Another player who could be on Nuno's radar is Ibrahim Sangaré, a midfielder who previously played under him at Nottingham Forest. West Ham was close to signing Sangaré on loan in the summer, but a deal could not be agreed upon. With Sangaré potentially featuring less under his current manager, a January move to West Ham could be back on the table.
Nuno is currently assessing his squad and discussing the January transfer budget with the club. His past managerial career includes leading Nottingham Forest to seventh place in the Premier League and the FA Cup semi-finals, as well as achieving success with Wolverhampton and Al Ittihad.. Nuno's preferred formation is 4-2-3-1.
