Nazem Kadri's Performance Under Scrutiny: Time Running Out to Justify His Role and Contract.

Nazem Kadri Isn’t the Problem, But He’s On the Clock

As the Calgary Flames navigate a tumultuous 2025-26 season, Nazem Kadri's role has come under scrutiny. While he isn't the primary source of the team's struggles, the 35-year-old center finds himself on the clock as the Flames evaluate their short-term competitiveness against long-term goals.

Kadri, in his fourth season with the Flames, has recorded 34 points in 49 games, with nine goals and 25 assists. While averaging nearly 20 minutes of ice time per game, his offensive production has been viewed by some as a "down year" relative to his career-high performance with the Colorado Avalanche in 2021-22. However, he continues to contribute with his physicality, skillful puck-handling, and aggressive forechecking, playing a role on both the power play and at even strength.

The Flames' inconsistent performance this season has led to speculation about Kadri's future with the team. With the team sitting at 21-23-5 as of late January, and outside of the playoff picture, General Manager Craig Conroy is faced with the task of balancing the present with the future. This includes potentially trading players to acquire younger assets and draft picks.

Conroy has not dismissed the possibility of trading Kadri if a deal arises that betters the team. According to TSN analyst Darren Dreger, there is a "strong chance" Kadri could be traded, with a return to Colorado being a possibility. NHL insider Frank Seravalli has also suggested the Minnesota Wild as a potential destination. However, a reunion with the Avalanche is unlikely due to their limited trade options and cap space. Other teams showing interest include the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, and Los Angeles Kings. The Canadiens showed moderate interest but might not have Kadri high on their list.

Kadri's contract, a seven-year, $49 million deal with a $7 million average annual value (AAV), extends through the 2028-29 season when he will be 38 years old. The contract also includes a 13-team no-trade list, giving Kadri some control over his destination. Dreger notes that Kadri and his agent, Darren Ferris, are collaborating with the Flames to find a mutually beneficial arrangement. Kadri wants to win a Stanley Cup but also wants what’s best for the Flames.

Despite the trade rumors, Kadri's impact on the Flames extends beyond mere statistics. His teammates and coaches admire his unwavering self-belief and clutch demeanor. Kadri's leadership is seen as a valuable asset, particularly for the team's younger players.

Ultimately, the decision regarding Kadri's future with the Flames will hinge on whether Conroy believes he fits into the team's long-term vision. The coming weeks will be critical in determining Calgary's playoff trajectory and overall roster strategy. The team has already been active in reshaping the roster, trading Rasmus Andersson to the Vegas Golden Knights for Zach Whitecloud, prospect Abram Wiebe, and future draft picks.
