Michael Carrick has revealed the backing he received from Ole Gunnar Solskjær for his role at Manchester United, acknowledging the respect he holds for the former manager. Carrick, a former Manchester United player himself, has taken the reins as interim manager until the end of the season.
Carrick was a key part of Solskjær's coaching team when the Norwegian was in charge at Old Trafford, from 2018 following Jose Mourinho’s departure. Manchester United held talks with both Solskjær and Carrick to discuss their plans for the rest of the season.
Carrick's appointment comes after some senior players voiced their preference for him to lead the team for the remainder of the season. Despite Solskjær being a favorite for the role and undergoing two interviews, concerns were raised about the players' confidence in him. The club's hierarchy also considered Solskjær's long-term ambitions and a perceived rustiness due to limited managerial experience since his previous stint.
Carrick presented a tactical approach that impressed the club's chief executive, Omar Berrada, and director of football, Jason Wilcox, with a plan to help Manchester United qualify for the Champions League. His proposed backroom team includes Jonny Evans, Steve Holland, and Travis Binnion.
Darren Fletcher, another Manchester United legend, took charge of the team for a Premier League match against Burnley. He described the opportunity as an "amazing honour" and expressed his pride in leading the team.
Sky Sports News reported that it was increasingly unlikely that Solskjær and Carrick would work together in an interim role. While both remained at the forefront of Manchester United's plans, the decision appeared to be between the two.
Carrick's first training session is expected to be on Wednesday, ahead of his first match in charge against Manchester City this weekend.
