Michael Carrick has acknowledged that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains a source of support and guidance as he navigates his role as interim manager for Manchester United. This follows reports that some players were not in favor of Solskjaer's return to the club after Ruben Amorim's dismissal. Carrick's appointment marks his second stint as interim manager, having previously overseen three matches in the 2021-22 campaign, securing two wins and a draw.
Carrick's ascent to the interim position came after the club considered Solskjaer for the role. Jason Wilcox, United's director of football, reportedly scouted Carrick, Solskjaer, and Ruud van Nistelrooy as potential candidates to manage the team until the end of the season. Ultimately, Carrick was chosen, with reports suggesting his lack of demands for long-term job security, unlike Solskjaer, bolstered his prospects.
Despite not being selected as interim manager, Solskjaer remains a supportive figure for Carrick. Carrick has stated that he has spoken with Solskjaer and values his support. "I spoke to him. We're close, we've been through a lot together, so he's been fully supportive as you'd expect". He further added, "He's some man and I respect him an awful lot. He wished us all the best and was happy".
Carrick's focus remains on the immediate challenges and strengths of the team. Following a recent match, Carrick highlighted the performance of young players Amad and Dorgu, echoing sentiments previously expressed by both Wayne Rooney and Solskjaer himself. Solskjaer had high hopes for Amad from the beginning, believing him to be one of the most exciting young prospects. Carrick said, "The two wide lads, Amad and Dorgu, were fantastic both ways".
Carrick's appointment as interim manager reflects a decision to prioritize a short-term focus, with the club opting for his approach over Solskjaer's reported demands for long-term security.
