Vancouver Canucks fans are bracing for an update on the future of star goaltender Thatcher Demko, with the team expected to address his status this week. Demko has been sidelined for over two weeks with a lower-body injury, adding to what has already been a difficult season for both the player and the team.

The Canucks' General Manager, Patrik Allvin, stated earlier this week that Demko is undergoing further evaluations and testing, with the organization seeking opinions from medical resources worldwide to determine the best course of action. Allvin hopes to have more concrete information regarding Demko's status by the end of the week. When asked if surgery was an option for Demko, Allvin confirmed that they are exploring opinions from around the world to assess the situation and determine necessary steps.

Adding to the uncertainty, NHL insider Rick Dhaliwal reported that the Canucks are likely to shut Demko down for the remainder of the 2025-26 season. Head Coach Adam Foote previously alluded to Demko dealing with multiple issues this season, raising the possibility of an early end to his campaign.

Demko's injury struggles have been a recurring theme in recent years. He previously missed 12 games in November and December due to a separate lower-body injury. Upon returning in December, Demko openly acknowledged his frustration with the situation. "Any guy can go through and have a great summer and then get hurt," Demko said, expressing his determination to stay ready despite the setbacks.

Before his current injury, Demko recorded an 8-10-1 record with a .897 save percentage and a 2.90 goals-against average. His absence has further complicated matters for the Canucks, who are currently languishing at the bottom of the standings.

The Canucks have recently welcomed back Teddy Blueger and Filip Chytil to their lineup. Marco Rossi is also expected to return either before or shortly after the Olympic break. However, Derek Forbort is expected to remain out for the season. The return of these players could provide the Canucks with a clearer picture of their long-term needs and which players they envision as part of their future. With the NHL trade deadline approaching on March 6th, the Canucks may use this information to make further roster adjustments.

The situation surrounding Demko remains fluid, and the Canucks' upcoming announcement will be crucial in determining the team's direction for the remainder of the season and potentially beyond.
