Hema Malini recently shared insights into the challenging filming conditions she faced while shooting the iconic song from the film Sholay. During a magazine cover launch commemorating 50 years of Sholay, the actress spoke with IANS about her experience filming the song barefoot on scorching rocks.
Malini revealed that her mother was extremely concerned about her well-being, especially given the intense heat during the month of May when the sequence was filmed. She recounted her mother's worries, stating, "My mother was so worried about me dancing on the rocks barefeet, especially considering the extreme heat".
Describing the harsh conditions, Malini explained that the sand, mud, and rocks were unbearably hot, making it painful to even step on the stones. Her mother suggested that she wear a thin sole under her feet to alleviate the pain, but this idea was quickly rejected by director Ramesh Sippy. Sippy pointed out that the soles would be visible during the dance movements and would not look right on screen.
Malini also admitted that she had tried to persuade Ramesh Sippy to shoot the song in November or December to avoid the extreme heat of May. She believed that cooler temperatures would have allowed her to dance more comfortably and effectively.
Despite the challenging conditions and her mother's concerns, Hema Malini persevered and delivered a memorable performance in the song. The song and the film Sholay went on to become classics in Indian cinema.
