Arne Slot has indicated his desire to keep Andy Robertson at Liverpool, despite interest from Tottenham Hotspur as the January transfer window nears its conclusion. Spurs have until February 2nd to finalize any transfer business.
Robertson's future at Anfield had become uncertain, especially with Milos Kerkez becoming Slot's preferred left-back this season. This limited Robertson to only four Premier League starts, with an average of just 39 minutes in his 14 top-flight appearances this term.
Tottenham's interest in the 31-year-old intensified after Ben Davies sustained an ankle injury. Spurs were initially targeting Robertson as a free-transfer in the summer, but Davies’ injury forced a change of plans. A deal worth £5 million was reportedly considered.
However, Liverpool halted talks with Tottenham after struggling to find suitable replacements. Slot replaced Kerkez with Robertson at half-time during Liverpool's 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth due to fitness concerns regarding the younger player. This decision highlights the lack of depth in Liverpool's defensive department. Joe Gomez's injury in the same match further exacerbated the situation.
Robertson has maintained "utmost professionalism" despite the transfer speculation. He hadn't "agitated" for a move, but was open to exploring the possibility raised by Spurs.
Robertson's contract expires at the end of the season, and Liverpool have not yet offered him a new one. Despite turning 32 in March, Robertson believes he can still perform at an elite level and wants to play regularly. He stated he needed to discuss his future with his family to determine whether to stay or explore other options.
Even if a move doesn't materialize this January, Tottenham may still be interested in Robertson as a free agent in the summer. Atletico Madrid have also been linked with Robertson.
