An FIR has been filed against actor Ranveer Singh in Bengaluru following allegations of insulting Hindu religious sentiments during a performance at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 28, 2025. The complaint was lodged by Bengaluru-based advocate Prashanth Methal with the High Grounds Police Station. The case has been registered under Sections 196, 299, and 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The complaint states that during the closing ceremony of IFFI, Singh allegedly made derogatory remarks and performed a "mocking stage act" that demeaned the Daiva tradition. Specifically, he is accused of imitating expressions associated with Panjurli and Guliga Daivas in a "crude, comical, and derogatory manner". Methal also claims that Singh referred to Chavundi Daiva as a "female ghost," which the complainant says is a misrepresentation that hurt religious sentiments. Chavundi Daiva is a revered guardian deity symbolizing divine feminine energy in the coastal regions of Karnataka.

According to the FIR, the complainant, a devotee of Chavundi Daiva, stated that Singh's actions insulted and mocked the sacred Daiva tradition in the presence of Rishab Shetty, the lead actor of the film Kantara: Chapter 1. Singh is also accused of enacting an emotional Chavundi Daiva scene from Kantara: Chapter 1, despite allegedly being requested not to perform the Daiva act. The complainant argues that Singh, as a widely followed public figure, performed the act on an international platform with the knowledge that it would hurt the religious sentiments of devotees.

The complainant said he became aware of the incident on December 2, 2025, after a video of the performance went viral on social media. Methal asserted that Daiva is not a ghost but a powerful guardian spirit symbolizing justice, protection, and divine feminine energy, holding deep religious and cultural significance in coastal Karnataka. Referring to the deity as a ghost is considered blasphemous and a serious insult to Hindu religious beliefs and practices.

The matter has been referred to the 1st Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Bengaluru and is scheduled for a hearing on April 8.

Following the initial criticism that surfaced months prior, Singh issued a public apology on social media on December 2, 2025. He stated that his intention was to highlight Rishab Shetty's incredible performance in Kantara.
