Hong Kong's Kai Thompson Reaches Australian Open Junior Quarter-Finals: An Inspiring Tennis Journey.

Hong Kong's Kai Thompson's Australian Open junior campaign has come to an end in the quarter-finals. The 17-year-old, who is currently unseeded, faced a tough challenge against No. 8 seed Zangar Nurlanuly of Kazakhstan on January 30.

Thompson's journey to the quarter-finals was marked by impressive victories. In the first round, he defeated Odysseas Geladaris of Greece with a score of 6-2, 7-6(3). He then went on to win against Cooper Kose in the second round. In the round of 16, Thompson faced Matei Tudoran and emerged victorious after a hard-fought match that lasted one hour and 39 minutes, with a final score of 7-6 (13-11), 6-3. The first set against Tudoran was particularly challenging, with Thompson eventually winning in a tie-break. In the second set, Thompson played with more relaxation, securing a crucial break in the eighth game and consolidating his lead with his serve.

Nurlanuly, Thompson's quarter-final opponent, had also demonstrated strong form leading up to their match. In the third round, Nurlanuly, the world No. 12 junior, defeated Savva Rybkin of Russia, who is the top under-18 player and ranked 13th in ITF Juniors, in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.

Thompson's performance at the Australian Open is a significant achievement for the young player. His participation in the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open 2026, where he made his ATP 250 debut, also showcased his talent and potential. Although he lost in the first round qualifying match against Emilio Nava, he gained valuable experience. Thompson's bronze medal in the 15th National Games Youth Team competition for Team Hong Kong, China, and a win at a clay tournament in Chinese Taipei further highlight his accomplishments.

Thompson's current singles ranking is 1945 as of January 30, 2026. He plays with both hands and has career earnings of $4,477.00 USD.
