On January 30, 2026, India commemorated the 78th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, also observed as Martyrs' Day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying tribute to the Father of the Nation, whose ideals continue to resonate and guide India's path towards development and self-reliance.

In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi conveyed his "hundredfold salutations" to Mahatma Gandhi, emphasizing Gandhi's unwavering focus on 'Swadeshi' (self-sufficiency) as a cornerstone of India's vision for a developed and self-reliant future. He asserted that Mahatma Gandhi's "personality and deeds will forever continue to inspire the people of the country to walk the path of duty".

The Prime Minister also highlighted Mahatma Gandhi's commitment to non-violence. Modi stated that non-violence holds immense power to change the world without weapons.

Various other leaders across the political spectrum joined in paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi. Union Minister G Kishan Reddy stated that Mahatma Gandhi's principles of Swadeshi, truth, non-violence, and selfless service continue to illuminate the path toward building an Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) and Viksit Bharat (developed India). Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik described Gandhi's ideals of Ahimsa (non-violence), truth, and peace as a guiding light for humanity that transcends time and geography. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute, acknowledging Gandhi's role in uniting a diverse nation and inspiring the freedom movement.

Observed annually on January 30th, Martyrs' Day marks the day Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in 1948 by Nathuram Godse. The president, vice president, prime minister, defense minister, and the three Service Chiefs gather at the Rajghat memorial to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Throughout the country, a two-minute silence is observed at 11 a.m. to honor his memory and the sacrifices made during India's struggle for independence.
