An NHL analyst has proposed a blockbuster trade that would send Artemi Panarin from the New York Rangers to the Toronto Maple Leafs, a suggestion that has sent ripples throughout the hockey world. The hypothetical deal, dissected and debated across various sports networks and online forums, has ignited discussions about its potential impact on both teams.
TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston reported that the Rangers are holding out Panarin for roster management purposes, and he is not expected to play before the Olympic break.
According to ESPN's Kevin Weekes, the Maple Leafs have expressed interest in acquiring the New York Rangers star winger Artemi Panarin. Weekes also named other teams that have expressed interest in Panarin, such as ANA, LA, SJ, VGK, DAL, UT, COL, MIN, SEA, TOR, CAR, WAS, TBL, NYI.
Artemi Panarin, a 34-year-old star forward, has consistently been one of the most productive offensive players in the league for the past decade, scoring 30 goals five times and posting more than 74 points in every season since joining the league, except for the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season.
The proposed trade is seen by some as a move that could potentially put the Maple Leafs over the top, while instantly becoming their best franchise-altering trade acquisition since the Doug Gilmour and Mats Sundin era. It's believed Panarin would fit in nicely beside Matthews and become the ideal Mitch Marner replacement.
However, acquiring Panarin would come at a steep price. Some analysts believe the Rangers would likely ask for a package similar to what the New York Islanders received when they traded Brock Nelson to the Colorado Avalanche, which included a first and third-round pick, along with top prospect Calum Ritchie. For the Maple Leafs, they don't have a first-round pick until 2028.
Adding to the complexity, Panarin's next contract is projected to be around $10-12 million for 4-5 years, which the Maple Leafs may not have the financial flexibility to take on without salary retention.
There is speculation that the Maple Leafs would need to give up significant assets, potentially including prospects like Easton Cowan and Ben Danford. Some believe that the cost might be too high, considering Panarin's age and the long-term financial implications.
Furthermore, it is important to note that Panarin would have to approve any move.
While the acquisition of Panarin would undoubtedly bring offensive firepower and star power to Toronto, the feasibility of the trade remains uncertain.
