Mona Singh: OTT Platforms Revolutionized Acting, Offering Artists Creative Freedom and New Experimental Avenues

Mona Singh has expressed that the rise of Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms has revolutionized the entertainment industry, particularly for actors. Singh believes that OTT platforms have provided actors with unprecedented freedom to experiment and explore complex characters, which was not always possible on traditional television.

According to Singh, OTT platforms have "changed the game" by eliminating ageism and providing women in their 40s with opportunities to play leading roles. She highlights that these platforms are casting women in flawed, layered characters that were previously unwritten, with narratives that are not solely defined by their relationships with men. Singh notes that she is receiving opportunities in her 40s that she never thought she would get and did not receive in her 30s, proving that "age is no bar" in the OTT space.

Singh emphasizes that OTT has provided a significant platform for makers, writers, creators, and actors to tell their stories and experiment. She feels liberated by the OTT format, noting that working on a web show for three months allows for breaks and the opportunity to return fresh and ready for a new character. She contrasts this with the "crazy timelines" of television, where shows now air throughout the week, making her wonder if TV actors even have a personal life.

Singh's journey from television to OTT has been a conscious decision, as she felt she had done everything possible in the television industry, including daily soaps, reality shows, and hosting. She patiently waited for the kind of roles she wanted, and while the switch wasn't easy, she believes it was worth it. Singh is currently balancing movies and OTT projects and has no desire to return to television.

Mona Singh is currently enjoying the success of Border 2, where she plays Sunny Deol's wife, and the OTT hit Bads of Bollywood. She is also set to play a formidable police inspector, Dhanwant Kaur, in the second season of Netflix's thriller series, Kohrra. Singh appreciates the complexity of the character, who is grappling with a murder investigation while dealing with her own domestic struggles, in a masculine culture.

Mona Singh also starred in Thode Door Thode Paas, a family drama that was released on ZEE5 on November 7, 2025. The series explores family bonds, love, and the importance of disconnecting from technology to foster genuine human connections.

While artificial intelligence (AI) is impacting various industries, Singh remains confident in the power of human imagination in storytelling. She believes that cinema and OTT platforms will continue to thrive because "real creativity isn't going anywhere".
