Heightened Security Operation in Kishtwar, J&K: Anti-Terror Efforts Increase Amidst Ongoing Internet Shutdown.

Security forces have intensified their anti-terror operation in the snowbound Chatroo belt of Kishtwar district in Jammu and Kashmir. The operation aims to track down and neutralize a group of three Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists believed to be hiding in the area.

The anti-terror operation was launched on January 18, 2026, after intelligence inputs regarding the presence of terrorists in the Sonnar forest near Mandral-Singhpora. A fierce gun battle ensued, resulting in the death of an Army paratrooper and injuries to seven soldiers. The terrorists managed to escape, taking advantage of the dense forest cover, difficult terrain, and heavy snowfall exceeding two feet. Subsequent encounters were reported at Mali Dana top on January 22 and Janseer-Kandiwar on January 25, but the militants again slipped deeper into the forest.

Mobile internet services have been temporarily suspended within a six-kilometer radius covering Singhpora, Chingam, and Chatroo. This measure is to prevent misuse of communication by anti-national elements during the ongoing operation. The internet suspension, initially imposed on January 23, has been extended until 11:59 pm on January 30, 2026. The order was issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Home Department. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu Zone, authorized the suspension under the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024. The decision was taken to prevent the possible misuse of high-speed mobile data services by anti-national elements, which could lead to deterioration of public order. The suspension applies to all generations of mobile data, including 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G.

In addition to the operation in Kishtwar, security forces have initiated a search operation in Pajja Morh, Nabana top, and adjoining areas of Surankote in Poonch district following information about the movement of two suspected persons. As of the latest reports, no contact had been established, and operations are continuing.
