Director Jeethu Joseph has confirmed that Drishyam 3, slated to release on April 2, 2026, will be the final installment in the popular Drishyam franchise. In a recent interview with Silly Monk Malayalam, Joseph stated that he has no plans to extend the series beyond the upcoming film.
"I have not even thought of it in my dreams. I am trying to end this because even people are asking me to stop it. That's why I am thinking this way,” Joseph said.
This statement puts an end to speculation regarding the potential continuation of the franchise with further sequels. The Drishyam series has garnered significant attention and commercial success, with remakes in multiple languages, including Hindi, and is now gearing up for Hollywood and Korean adaptations.
The original film, Drishyam (2013), introduced audiences to Georgekutty, a resourceful middle-class man, played by Mohanlal, who goes to extreme lengths to protect his family after they become entangled in an unexpected crime. The sequel, Drishyam 2, released in 2021, continued the narrative, exploring new dimensions of the family's struggle and the persistent investigation. Drishyam 3 is expected to delve further into the lives of Georgekutty and his family, picking up four and a half years after the events of the second film.
Joseph's decision to conclude the franchise with Drishyam 3 appears to stem from a desire to maintain the quality and organic nature of the storytelling. In an earlier interview with SCREEN, Joseph mentioned his focus on staying true to the emotional core of the characters and allowing the story to evolve naturally. He emphasized that Drishyam 3 would not simply replicate the formula of its predecessors but would reflect the changes in the characters and their environment over time. According to Joseph, the daughters, Anju and Anu, are older, and the community's perception of Georgekutty's family has shifted.
Jeethu Joseph also addressed his approach to the film's visual style. He told The New Indian Express that he aims for authenticity. "For a story set in rural Idukki, I can't use soft lighting and make it look like a Scandinavian thriller. It might look stylish, but to me it would feel alien," he explained.
Drishyam 3, starring Mohanlal, Meena, Ansiba Hassan, and Esther Anil, is scheduled to be released worldwide on April 2, 2026.
