Moscow, February 9, 2026 (PTI) - Russia has pledged its full support for India's chairmanship of BRICS, emphasizing the "modern, highly-relevant" agenda presented by the Indian chair, according to Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. This commitment underscores Russia's dedication to the BRICS framework and its objectives.
India's BRICS agenda prioritizes crucial areas such as counter-terrorism and energy security. These initiatives reflect a focus on addressing pressing global challenges and fostering stability within the BRICS nations and beyond. In addition to counter-terrorism and energy security, India's agenda includes a focus on information and communication technology (ICT) security and artificial intelligence (AI). These areas are seen as vital for navigating the complexities of the modern world and preparing for the future. In the coming month or so, India will host an artificial intelligence summit, to which Russia is invited, and Russia is actively contributing to the agenda.
Lavrov highlighted the continuity of purpose within BRICS, noting that each chair builds upon the initiatives of its predecessors. He mentioned Russia's chairmanship in 2024, during which several initiatives related to alternative platforms and mechanisms to support the global economy were launched. These initiatives were further refined under Brazil's chairmanship last year and are now being advanced under India's leadership.
Counter-terrorism remains a key area of focus, particularly in regions such as Afghanistan, along its borders, and the India–Pakistan–Afghanistan corridor, as well as in other hotspots. Lavrov stressed the importance of working with India in the UN to advance a global counter-terrorism convention, which is already drafted, although consensus has not yet been reached.
Energy security is another critical priority, especially in light of actions taken by the Trump administration in the global energy sector. India also emphasizes ICT security, which Russia actively supports, recognizing the growing importance of cybersecurity in the digital age.
Looking ahead, BRICS is envisioned as a platform for harmonizing economic, social, and infrastructural development plans across Eurasia, Africa, and Latin America. With the inclusion of Eurasian giants like China, India, Russia, and now Indonesia, BRICS is positioned to play a significant role in shaping the Greater Eurasian Partnership.
In an exclusive interview with TV BRICS, Lavrov assessed BRICS' role on the global stage, the prospects for the group's development, and the objectives of India's 2026 chairmanship. The priorities outlined by India – resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainable development – align with Russia's vision of international cooperation.
