Government Assures Supreme Court Sonam Wangchuk Receives Optimal Care, Emphasizing His 'Perfectly Good' Condition.

The Centre has informed the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday, February 9, 2026, that climate activist Sonam Wangchuk is in "perfectly good" condition and is receiving the "best of treatment" at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jodhpur, while in custody. This information was conveyed to a bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and P B Varale by Additional Solicitor General (ASG) K M Nataraj.

The court was hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali Angmo, challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA). The NSA allows for preventive detention for up to 12 months without formal charges or a trial. Wangchuk has been detained since September of last year in connection with his alleged role in protests in Ladakh.

At the beginning of the hearing, Justice Kumar inquired about any progress in reviewing Wangchuk's detention, considering his reported deteriorating health. ASG Nataraj responded that no progress had been made thus far but assured the court that Wangchuk was receiving the best possible treatment.

Wangchuk's counsel argued that his detention should be reconsidered due to his continued ill health. Justice Varale noted that the court had made a similar suggestion previously, acknowledging Wangchuk's health issues. ASG Nataraj responded by saying that "So far, the health issue is concerned, he is perfectly good Jaipur is a better place to get treatment than Ladakh. There is AIIMS in Rajasthan, whereas in Ladakh, there would have been nothing".

The Centre and the Ladakh administration had previously told the court that Wangchuk was detained for instigating people in a sensitive border area. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that all procedural safeguards were followed during Wangchuk's detention under the NSA and that Wangchuk was attempting to incite protests similar to those in Nepal and Bangladesh, even referencing Arab Spring-like agitations.

The Supreme Court decided to hear the plea of Wangchuk's wife on Wednesday, stating that no further delays would be accepted.
