Edmonton Oilers' hopes for a deep playoff run are facing increasing scrutiny as concerns mount over the team's defensive vulnerabilities. Despite boasting a formidable offensive lineup led by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, the Oilers' inability to consistently prevent goals is threatening to derail their Stanley Cup aspirations.
"We're just giving up too many goals. Can't defend," Draisaitl stated bluntly after a recent loss to the Calgary Flames. His comments highlighted the team's struggles, with the Oilers surrendering four or more goals in three consecutive games and at least three goals in seven straight leading up to the Olympic break. Draisaitl also pointed to the penalty kill as an area needing improvement.
The Oilers' defensive shortcomings have become glaring when facing elite teams. Against top teams in the Central Division, such as Colorado, Dallas, and Minnesota, the Oilers have struggled significantly, being outscored 34-12 in those games. This inability to elevate their game against stronger opponents raises concerns about their ability to compete in the playoffs.
Several factors contribute to the Oilers' defensive woes. Questionable defensive play and inconsistent puck management from key players like Darnell Nurse have drawn criticism. Goaltending has also been an issue, despite the team's efforts to address it. The Oilers made a significant change in December, replacing Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard with Tristan Jarry and Connor Ingram. However, the team's goals-against average and save percentage have only seen marginal improvement. As of February 8th, 2026, the Oilers sit 26th in the NHL in penalty kill percentage with 76.9%.
Head coach Kris Knoblauch has acknowledged the need for a shift in mindset, emphasizing the importance of focusing on defending first. "I think every time we're out there, we're thinking about scoring goals rather than defending, and a lot of our issues are on that," Knoblauch said.
With the NHL trade deadline approaching on March 6th, the Oilers are exploring options to bolster their defensive corps. General Manager Stan Bowman has reportedly been engaged in trade discussions, with the team looking to add a shutdown defenseman. Potential targets include Connor Murphy of the Chicago Blackhawks, known for his penalty-killing abilities. The Oilers have also been linked to Toronto Maple Leafs players such as Bobby McMann, Nicolas Roy, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson. To make room for any acquisitions, the Oilers may need to move out players like Andrew Mangiapane.
The Oilers' struggles extend beyond just one player or position. "It's a lot between the ears," defenseman Mattias Ekholm said, suggesting a mental component to the team's defensive issues. "It's respecting defence...It's a mental thing for us".
As the Oilers approach the final stretch of the season, addressing their defensive deficiencies will be crucial for their playoff hopes. Whether through internal adjustments, strategic acquisitions, or a combination of both, the Oilers must find a way to shore up their defense if they want to contend for the Stanley Cup.
