Chennai, February 10, 2026 - Tamil cinema legends Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan have reportedly completed a promo shoot with an 80s-style theme for their upcoming collaboration, tentatively titled "Thalaivar 173". This project, co-produced by Kamal Haasan under Raaj Kamal Films International, marks a significant reunion for the two stalwarts of the industry.

According to reports, the promo features Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan in vintage looks, embarking on a car ride together. The scene is said to include Rajinikanth tossing car keys to Kamal Haasan in his signature style, with Kamal catching them mid-air before they both enter the vehicle. With trademark swagger, they then drive off on what is described as an adventurous ride.

While there has been no official confirmation from the filmmakers, the buzz surrounding the project is substantial. Initial reports suggest that "Thalaivar 173" will be a light-hearted, slice-of-life drama that focuses on the friendship between the two central characters, offering a fresh perspective on their dynamic.

Cibi Chakravarthi is directing the film, taking over from Sundar C, who had to step down due to prior commitments. Anirudh Ravichander is composing the music for the film. Director Chakravarthi has expressed confidence in the film, promising that audiences will leave theaters with satisfaction.

The collaboration has generated considerable excitement among fans, who are eager to see the two "kings" of Tamil cinema share the screen again. Fresh promotional material has already been released, commemorating the decades-long camaraderie between Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. In November 2025, the Thalaivar 173 team shared a promo video featuring Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and Sundar C meeting to finalize the project. The clip began with Rajinikanth stepping out of the car in his signature style and entering the production house office, later joined by Kamal Haasan and Sundar C.

Rajinikanth will also be seen in the much-anticipated sequel, "Jailer 2", directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. Kamal Haasan is also slated to appear in the tentatively titled "KH237", directed by the Anbariv duo.

While a release date for "Thalaivar 173" is yet to be announced, makers are reportedly aiming for a mid-2026 release.
