Kiren Rijiju Shares Video: Parliament Showdown on February 4th Could Have Escalated to "Very Ugly Scene."

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has shared a video on social media platform X, depicting a showdown that occurred in Parliament on February 4, 2026, leading to the adjournment of the session just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to address the Lok Sabha. Speaker Om Birla reportedly advised the Prime Minister to avoid attending the session due to the anticipated disruptions from opposition MPs.

The video shared by Rijiju shows women MPs moving towards the Prime Minister's chair amidst a chaotic scene. Rijiju stated that the Congress Party should be ashamed of their MPs' behavior. He further added that a potentially "very ugly scene" was averted only because BJP MPs were restrained from confronting the Congress MPs. Rijiju emphasized the importance of protecting the dignity and sanctity of the Parliament.

The events of February 4 involved uproar in both Houses of Parliament over the India-US trade deal and the unpublished memoirs of former Army chief MM Naravane. The Lower House had already been experiencing disruptions after Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition, was prevented from quoting an article referencing the memoir on the 2020 India-China conflict.

Following the incident, BJP MPs wrote to Speaker Birla alleging that opposition women MPs "surrounded the Prime Minister's seat" and later "aggressively approached the Speaker's chamber". They urged the Speaker to take strong action against the MPs involved. This came in response to a letter from Congress women MPs alleging that the ruling party forced Birla to make "false, baseless, and defamatory" claims against them.

Rijiju has accused Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge of misleading the House. He said that Congress MPs crossed over to the Treasury side, nearly laying siege to the entire area. Rijiju stated that BJP women MPs were very agitated by the conduct of the Congress MPs and that BJP MPs were stopped from physical confrontation.

Rijiju also alleged that 40-50 opposition MPs barged into Speaker Om Birla's chamber and spoke "in a nasty way" before the Prime Minister's scheduled speech. He said that this situation contributed to the decision to have the Prime Minister address the Rajya Sabha instead, to prevent further disruption. Rijiju clarified that despite having the numbers to force proceedings, the government chose to avoid confrontation. He affirmed that the decision regarding the Lok Sabha was taken to prevent further disruption and to protect the dignity of the Prime Minister's office.
