The Delhi High Court on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, urged the parties involved in the dispute over the estate of the late businessman Sunjay Kapur to consider resolving the matter through mediation. Justice Mini Pushkarna, presiding over the case, described the situation as a "very sorry state of affairs," noting that the public airing of grievances was akin to "a lot of dirty linen being washed in the open".
The dispute centers on Sunjay Kapur's estate, which is estimated to be worth thousands of crores. At the heart of the legal battle is a will produced by Sunjay's third wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, who claims that he bequeathed his entire personal estate to her in 2025. This claim is being challenged by Karisma Kapoor, Sunjay's ex-wife, on behalf of their two children, who allege that the will is forged. Sunjay's mother, Rani Kapur, has also joined the challenge, questioning the authenticity of the will and Priya Kapur's control over the estate and has filed a suit to declare the family trust illegal. The RK Family Trust, is valued at several thousand crores.
Justice Pushkarna acknowledged the personal loss suffered by all parties involved but emphasized that the significant financial wealth they possess should be a source of comfort rather than conflict. The court cautioned against allowing this blessing to become a curse. Addressing Akhil Sibal, the Senior Advocate representing Priya Kapur, Justice Pushkarna urged him and his client to take a proactive approach towards mediation, given Priya's central role in the administration of the estate.
The court observed that all parties are currently suffering due to the ongoing legal battle and noted Rani Kapur's advanced age, emphasizing the emotional toll of witnessing children predecease their parents. The judge also recognized the difficult position Priya Kapur is in.
During the proceedings, the court also heard that when Sunjay Kapur took over the family business, it was incurring losses, but through his leadership, it was turned around, culminating in a successful IPO in 2021. The High Court has issued notice on applications filed by Priya Kapur seeking dismissal of the suit and directed the parties to file their responses within four weeks, with rejoinders to follow within two weeks thereafter.
Justice Pushkarna encouraged all sides to consider settling the dispute amicably through mediation and directed lawyers for all parties to speak to their clients and seek instructions on whether they are willing to explore this path. The court has scheduled the next hearing for March 23, 2026.
