Meta employs both automatic detection systems and allows users to self-disclose AI-generated content by selecting "Add AI label" during posting. Failing to label AI-generated content can lead to penalties.

TikTok requires users to mark synthetic or AI-manipulated content and has introduced its own "AI-generated" label that appears on videos. The platform is also developing tools for automatic detection. YouTube, which began enforcing its AI disclosure policy in early 2025, requires creators to label "realistic altered or synthetic content" that could mislead viewers. This includes synthetic voices and digitally manipulated visuals.

These labeling systems are often tied to provenance metadata and detection algorithms. Meta's system, for example, is powered by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) standard, which attaches verifiable metadata to files generated or edited by AI tools. This makes the provenance of AI images transparent and prevents them from being passed off as authentic photography.

The requirement to label AI-generated content applies broadly, including content on company websites, social media platforms, and within content tools. The labels must be clear, understandable, and noticeable, using text notices, visual labels, metadata, or technical markers to avoid any deception. While the exact form of labeling is not strictly defined, the key is to ensure transparency.

These new rules reflect a growing awareness of the potential for AI-generated content to mislead or deceive. By requiring platforms to label such content, regulators aim to foster greater transparency and trust online.
