The Indian civil aviation system is on high alert following a tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad and a series of subsequent incidents involving Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. In the wake of the Ahmedabad tragedy, which involved a London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashing shortly after takeoff and killing at least 270 people, Air India has cancelled six international flights on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, due to increased safety precautions and regulatory compliance measures.

The cancelled services include AI 915 from Delhi (DEL) to Dubai (DXB), AI 153 from Delhi (DEL) to Vienna (VIE), AI 143 from Delhi (DEL) to Paris (CDG), AI 159 from Ahmedabad (AMD) to London (LGW), AI 170 from London (LGW) to Amritsar (ATQ) and Bengaluru-London.

Adding to the concern, an Air India flight from San Francisco to Mumbai via Kolkata experienced a technical snag, causing passengers to deboard during a stopover at Kolkata International Airport due to a problem in the left engine. Furthermore, several other Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights have returned to their departure airports shortly after takeoff in recent days. One such incident involved an Air India flight from Hong Kong to Delhi, which was turned around due to a technical issue. A British Airways Boeing 787-8 from London's Heathrow to Chennai also returned to London after takeoff due to a reported flap adjustment failure.

India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) initially considered grounding all 787 Dreamliners but instead opted for enhanced inspections. DGCA stated that recent surveillance of Air India's Boeing 787 fleet revealed no major safety concerns and that the aircraft and associated maintenance systems complied with existing safety standards. However, the DGCA has raised concerns about recent maintenance-related issues at Air India and has directed the airline to improve coordination between departments.

Air India has attributed some of the cancellations to technical issues discovered during pre-flight checks and to airspace restrictions. They specifically stated that the Dreamliner designated for the Ahmedabad-London Gatwick service had no technical problems but was cancelled due to aircraft unavailability and airspace restrictions. Despite the disruptions, Air India is providing affected passengers with alternative arrangements and accommodation.
