Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with Brazil's highest civilian award, the 'Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross'. The honor was presented by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. This recognition acknowledges PM Modi's significant contributions to strengthening bilateral relations between India and Brazil and enhancing cooperation across key global platforms.

The 'Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross' is the highest grade of the Order of the Southern Cross, a Brazilian decoration awarded to foreign heads of state. It is reserved for foreign heads of state and is considered one of the most distinguished honors Brazil bestows. The award serves as a token of gratitude and recognition for individuals who have rendered significant service to the Brazilian nation.

PM Modi is currently on a four-day visit to Brazil, where he is participating in the 17th BRICS Summit. On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi is expected to hold several bilateral meetings with world leaders. Earlier in the trip, PM Modi received a warm welcome from the Indian community in Rio de Janeiro. Members of the Indian diaspora performed traditional dances and folk songs.

The Prime Minister's visit includes a State Visit to Brasilia, where he will engage in bilateral discussions with President Lula on broadening the Strategic Partnership between the two countries. Areas of mutual interest include trade, defense, energy, space, technology, agriculture, health, and people-to-people linkages. This marks the first bilateral visit to Brazil by an Indian Prime Minister in nearly six decades.

During the BRICS Summit, key global issues such as peace and security, strengthening multilateralism, responsible use of artificial intelligence, climate action, global health, and economic and financial matters are being discussed. India is a founding member of BRICS and is committed to the bloc as a vital platform for cooperation among emerging economies. India will assume the BRICS Chairship next year, having last held it in 2021.

Prior to arriving in Brazil, PM Modi visited Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Argentina. In Argentina, he held talks with President Javier Milei and agreed to diversify trade and increase cooperation in various sectors, including defense, critical minerals, and energy. Following his visit to Brazil, PM Modi will travel to Namibia.
