German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Johann Wadephul has affirmed India's pivotal role in the Indo-Pacific region, highlighting the country's growing global influence and the strong ties between Germany and India. Wadephul, who is on a two-day official visit to India that began on September 2, 2025, underscored the importance of the two nations working together to preserve global stability and the rules-based international order.

Ahead of his visit, Wadephul described India as a "key partner in the Indo-Pacific," emphasizing the close political, economic, and cultural connections between the two countries. He pointed out the significant potential for expanding their strategic partnership across various sectors, including security cooperation, innovation and technology, and the recruitment of skilled workers.

The German Foreign Minister's visit includes meetings with key Indian officials to discuss strengthening bilateral ties. He is scheduled to meet with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to discuss security, technology, and workforce recruitment. His itinerary also includes a visit to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Bengaluru.

Wadephul stressed that India's voice, as the world's most populous country and largest democracy, is heard beyond the Indo-Pacific region. He emphasized the natural alliance between democracies like Germany and India, particularly in the face of increasing geopolitical challenges. "India plays a decisive role in shaping the international order of our century," Wadephul stated. "We as democracies are natural partners in this. In view of massive geopolitical challenges, we want and must preserve the rules-based international order together".

Germany is looking to strengthen its economic and security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, expand technology partnerships, and recruit skilled workers from India. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Germany is one of India's closest partners in Europe. Diplomatic ties between the two countries date back to 1951, and they marked 70 years of relations in 2021. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz have met six times in the past two years, which underscores the strength of the partnership.

The visit also follows External Affairs Minister Jaishankar's talks with Germany's MP Jurgen Hardt in New Delhi. India and Germany are celebrating the milestone of completion of 25 years of Strategic Partnership which came into force in 2000. The partnership was further strengthened by the launch of Intergovernmental Consultations (IGC) at the level of Heads of Government in 2011. In May, Jaishankar had visited Germany and met Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

During his trip, Minister Wadephul also plans to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine and the rising influence of China in the Indo-Pacific. This comes as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The talks highlight the complex geopolitical landscape and the importance of a rules-based international order.
