Amid strained relations between the United States and India, Jason Miller, a political lobbyist hired by India, met with former U.S. President Donald Trump and members of his administration. The meeting occurred against a backdrop of escalating trade tensions and disagreements over India's energy ties with Russia.

Miller, whose firm SHW Partners LLC was contracted by India in April for $1.8 million for a year, posted photos of his meeting with Trump on social media. While the specific agenda of the meeting was not disclosed, it has sparked speculation given the current state of U.S.-India relations.

The tensions between the two countries have risen following Trump's decision to increase tariffs on Indian goods, including a 50% tariff and a 25% punitive tariff for India's continued purchase of Russian crude oil. Washington has expressed concerns that India's actions are indirectly funding Moscow's war in Ukraine, while New Delhi has described the tariffs as "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable".

Despite these disagreements, there have been recent attempts to stabilize relations. Trump has referred to India as a close partner and voiced personal regard for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "I will always be friends with Modi. He is a great prime minister. He's great. I'll always be friends, but I just don't like what he's doing at this particular moment," Trump stated. He also emphasized the "special relationship" between the two countries, stating, "There is nothing to worry about".

Prime Minister Modi reciprocated Trump's sentiments, affirming the "very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership" between India and the U.S..

Miller's meeting with Trump, though its purpose remains unclear, is set against this backdrop of delicate diplomacy and high-stakes negotiations. Miller is a former Trump aide and was a key figure in Trump's 2016, 2020, and 2024 election campaigns.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that Pakistan has also hired a lobbyist with close ties to Trump. Keith Schiller, Trump's former bodyguard and Director of Oval Office Operations, has been contracted by Pakistan through his firm, Javelin Associates.

As the U.S. and India navigate these challenging times, the role of lobbyists like Miller becomes increasingly significant in shaping the narrative and influencing policy decisions. The outcome of these behind-the-scenes interactions could have far-reaching consequences for the future of U.S.-India relations.
