US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has emphasized the growing importance of the relationship between the United States and India, calling it "one of the top relationships the US has in the world today". Speaking on Thursday, September 11, 2025, during the Senate confirmation hearing for Sergio Gor, President Trump's nominee for US Ambassador to India, Rubio highlighted the "extraordinary transition" occurring in the dynamics between Washington and Delhi.
Rubio, appearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, underscored India's pivotal role in shaping the global future, especially within the Indo-Pacific region. He noted the importance of having a US representative in India who possesses the President's direct ear and confidence. He lauded Gor's close working relationship with President Trump, stating that he is "very, very close to the President" and someone who can "get things done both in the administration and through the Oval Office". Rubio added, "I don't know of anyone out there that's better positioned to do that than Gor".
Rubio highlighted the evolving geopolitical landscape, emphasizing that "in the 21st century, the story is going to be written in the Indo-Pacific". He pointed to the strategic importance of the region, noting, "In fact, it's so important that we've actually changed the name of the combatant command of the Indo-Pacific. India is at the core of that".
Rubio also addressed the pressing issues that necessitate close collaboration between the two nations. "We are in a period of extraordinary transition in that relationship with India. We've got some really important issues coming up that we need to work with them on and work through that implicate what's happening from Ukraine, but also implicate what's happening in the region," he stated.
President Trump nominated Sergio Gor, the Director of Presidential Personnel, to be the next US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs last month. At 38 years old, Gor is set to be the youngest American ambassador to India upon confirmation. Rubio expressed his confidence in Gor, emphasizing that his long-standing acquaintance with the nominee and his unparalleled access to the President would facilitate effective cooperation between the two countries.
