Perplexity AI has officially launched its AI-powered Comet browser in India for all 'Pro' users, eliminating the waitlist requirement. This strategic move aims to capitalize on India's rapidly growing AI user base, which is the second largest market for Perplexity AI after the US.
Comet, first introduced in July 2025, is designed as an AI-first browser that functions as a personal assistant and thinking partner. Unlike traditional browsers like Chrome or Edge that rely on a tabbed interface, Comet features a unique workspace that provides users with easy access to all the information they need in one place.
A key component of Comet is the Comet Assistant, an AI agent that automates routine tasks. It can manage tabs, summarize emails and calendar events, navigate web pages, make online purchases, schedule meetings, and even convert web pages into email drafts. Users can interact with the assistant through text or voice prompts. Perplexity AI plans to enhance the agent's capabilities in future updates.
Currently, Comet is available for macOS and Windows users in India. Android users can pre-order the app on the Google Play Store, although an official release date has not been announced. iOS support is expected later.
Perplexity AI is also rolling out its Email Assistant tool for Max plan users. This AI-powered tool helps users manage their inboxes by scheduling meetings, sorting and prioritizing emails, and composing automatic responses. Email Assistant currently supports Gmail and Outlook.
The launch of Comet in India is part of Perplexity AI's broader strategy to expand its presence in the country. In August 2025, Perplexity partnered with Airtel to offer a year of complimentary Perplexity Pro subscriptions to millions of Airtel customers. The company is also reportedly looking to hire in India, signaling its commitment to the local market.
Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI, has described Comet as a shift from "browsing to thinking," positioning it as a thinking partner rather than a passive tool. The browser is built on Chromium and includes an always-on AI sidebar. Comet also prioritizes user privacy by storing browsing history and AI interactions locally with end-to-end encryption.
With the launch of Comet and Email Assistant, Perplexity AI aims to provide a comprehensive AI-powered solution for web browsing and email management, enhancing productivity and efficiency for users in India.
