A tragic stampede at a rally held by actor-politician Vijay in Karur, Tamil Nadu, has resulted in numerous fatalities, with initial reports indicating at least 20 deaths, including children. The incident occurred on September 27, 2025, as supporters of Vijay's political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), awaited his arrival, some for as long as six hours.

The situation grew chaotic as a massive crowd gathered, estimated to be around 30,000 people. As Vijay continued his speech, the crowd became uncontrollable. Reports indicate that several people fainted due to the crush and heat, further exacerbating the situation. Some reports suggest the death toll has risen to 31, including six children and 16 women. Over 40 people are receiving medical treatment.

Witnesses reported that ambulances struggled to navigate the packed streets to reach those in need. Vijay briefly paused his speech and attempted to distribute water bottles from his campaign bus in response to the unfolding crisis.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has expressed his concern and directed the Karur district collector to provide immediate medical assistance, including support from neighboring districts. The Health Minister and School Education Minister were also instructed to rush to Karur, and ADGP (Law and Order) Davidson Devasirvatham was dispatched to the scene. Stalin has appealed to the public to cooperate with doctors and police. He is expected to visit Karur tomorrow.

Prime Minister Modi has offered condolences. The DMK has blamed Vijay for negligence and called for his arrest.
