A stampede at a political rally in Tamil Nadu, a state in southern India, has resulted in the deaths of at least 36 people and injuries to 40 others. The tragedy occurred during a public meeting held on Saturday by actor and politician Vijay, president of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, in Karur. The rally was part of Vijay's statewide tour in the lead-up to next year's Assembly elections.
An estimated crowd of approximately 100,000 people gathered to see and hear Vijay, also known as Thalapathy by his fans. As the event progressed, overcrowding led to several individuals, including party workers and children, fainting. The situation reportedly became chaotic after a nine-year-old girl went missing, causing a surge in the crowd as people searched for her. This sudden movement exacerbated the already strained conditions, triggering the stampede despite the presence of numerous security personnel.
As the situation worsened, Vijay halted his speech and appealed for calm, urging supporters to make way for ambulances. Water bottles were distributed, and medical teams were deployed to assist those feeling unwell. The injured were rushed to Karur Medical College Hospital and nearby private hospitals for treatment. However, ambulances struggled to navigate through the massive crowd, delaying the transport of patients. Following the hospitalization of several attendees, police conducted a baton charge to disperse the crowd and restore order.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his concern over the incident and has instructed authorities to provide immediate medical assistance to those injured. He has also been in contact with key officials to coordinate relief efforts. Former Chief Minister and AIADMK General Secretary E Palaniswami described the incident as "shocking and heartbreaking" and mobilized party members to assist those in need.
