Donald Trump Praises Pakistan's Army Chief, Acknowledging His Role in Brokering India-Pakistan Ceasefire.

Donald Trump has once again claimed credit for brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, stating that Pakistan's Army Chief, Asim Munir, acknowledged his role in preventing a major conflict. Trump asserted that Munir told him he "saved millions of lives" by stopping the war.

Trump's remarks came after a meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir at the White House. He recounted Munir's supposed words: "This man saved millions of lives because he stopped the war from going on. That war was going to get very bad… I loved the way he said it". Trump noted that Munir's commendation left a positive impression on him.

The former US President has repeatedly taken credit for the ceasefire, even suggesting he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for preventing wars. He stated that he intervened when India and Pakistan were "going at it," claiming he stopped the conflict, which he said had been "raging for four days," by warning of trade consequences. Trump claimed that hostilities had been escalating, with reports of seven planes being shot down.

The alleged conflict between India and Pakistan occurred in May 2025, following India's "Operation Sindoor," which targeted terrorist locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This operation was reportedly launched in response to the killing of 26 civilians in the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22. A ceasefire was announced on May 10.

Trump also mentioned his discussions with Pakistani officials on other topics, including Iran and trade. He highlighted Pakistan's understanding of Iran and confirmed ongoing trade negotiations.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also expressed his admiration for Trump, describing him as a "man of peace" dedicated to resolving global conflicts. Sharif stated that Trump's actions facilitated the ceasefire, preventing a potential "major catastrophe" in South Asia.

Asim Munir's background includes serving as the Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Some reports suggest that tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the Pulwama attack in 2019 when Munir was with the ISI.

It's worth noting that some reports contradict Trump's claims of mediation, stating that the ceasefire was achieved through Director General of Military Operations-level talks, without direct US mediation.
