Two police constables in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvannamalai district have been arrested and suspended following allegations of raping a 25-year-old woman from Andhra Pradesh. The incident has sparked outrage and prompted a swift investigation.

The victim and her mother, who were selling fruits, had traveled from Andhra Pradesh to Tiruvannamalai. Initial reports indicate that the survivor and her sister were traveling in a goods-laden truck to deliver vegetables and fruits to a market in Tiruvannamalai. As they were returning, two constables stopped their vehicle at the Enthal bypass road for a routine inspection. The constables, identified as Suresh Raj and Sundar, allegedly forced the women to get out of the van. They then took the younger woman, to a secluded area and raped her. It has been reported that the constables allegedly thrashed the survivor and dragged her to a bushy area. The crime occurred near the Aendal bypass. After the assault, the constables abandoned the woman and her sister on the roadside around 4 am. Workers at a nearby brick kiln noticed the women and alerted an ambulance.

Following the incident, the woman was taken to Tiruvannamalai Government General Hospital, where medical professionals confirmed the sexual assault. Authorities promptly arrested the two constables based on the survivor's statement and initiated further inquiries. The Tiruvannamalai all-women police station is handling the case.

News of the rape has triggered widespread condemnation, with many calling for strict action against the accused. Palaniswami and Dhinakaran have condemned the sexual assault.

This incident is one of several recent cases of sexual assault in Tamil Nadu. In July 2025, a man from West Bengal was arrested for allegedly kidnapping and raping a 10-year-old girl in Tiruvallur. In another case, an 80-year-old woman was raped in Cuddalore, leading to the arrest of a 23-year-old man.
