The Edmonton Oilers are reportedly showing interest in Chicago Blackhawks forward Lukas Reichel. The 23-year-old German winger, drafted 17th overall by Chicago in 2020, has struggled to find consistency in the NHL and may benefit from a change of scenery.

Reichel is currently under a two-year, $2.4 million contract with a $1.2 million cap hit per season. His contract expires at the end of the 2025-26 season, at which point he will become a restricted free agent.

In 169 career NHL games, Reichel has recorded 20 goals and 34 assists. Last season, he registered eight goals and 14 assists in 70 games with the Blackhawks. However, he has, at times, been a healthy scratch, and his average ice time has decreased.

Several factors make Reichel an intriguing target for the Oilers. First, Oilers General Manager Stan Bowman was the Blackhawks' GM who drafted Reichel. Bowman may still believe in Reichel's potential and be willing to give him a chance in Edmonton. Second, the Oilers need to add youth and skill to their forward ranks, particularly on the wings. Reichel could provide inexpensive, high-upside talent to play alongside stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Third, the cost to acquire Reichel may be relatively low. Reports suggest the Blackhawks are seeking a mid-to-late-round draft pick in exchange for him.

Some believe Reichel's struggles in Chicago are due to a poor fit within the team's rebuilding environment, where inconsistent ice time and magnified mistakes can hinder young players. Playing with established stars in Edmonton could allow Reichel to rediscover his scoring touch.

However, questions remain about where Reichel would fit into the Oilers' lineup. The Oilers are undergoing a youth movement, with prospects like Matt Savoie and Ike Howard potentially joining the team this season. It is debatable where Reichel would fit.
