Akshay Oberoi, who plays a supporting role in the upcoming romantic comedy Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, has weighed in on the film's box office clash with Kantara: Chapter 1. Both films are releasing in theaters on October 2, 2025. Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari was initially slated to release in April 2025 but was pushed to a later date due to the ill health of the director, Shashank Khaitan.
Speaking on the clash, Akshay Oberoi stated that if the producer of Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari chose to release the film on the same date as Kantara: Chapter 1, then he trusts their decision.
Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari is directed by Shashank Khaitan and stars Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, Sanya Malhotra, and Rohit Saraf in the lead roles. The film is produced by Dharma Productions and Mentor Disciple Entertainment. The romantic comedy revolves around two former lovers reuniting to separate their respective exes who are getting married. Varun Dhawan's character, Sunny Sanskari, is lovestruck and wants to win over Ananya, played by Sanya Malhotra. Rohit Saraf plays Janhvi Kapoor’s ex, Vikram. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has given the film a U/A 13+ certificate, after ordering the makers to mute a word and trim down kissing scenes by 60 percent. The film's runtime is 2 hours 15 minutes and 45 seconds.
Kantara: Chapter 1 is a prequel to the 2022 hit film Kantara. Written and directed by Rishab Shetty, the prequel explores the mythological origins of the story told in Kantara. The film is set ten centuries before the events of the first film and features Shetty in a new role alongside Rukmini Vasanth, Jayaram, and Gulshan Devaiah.
Advance bookings for Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari opened on Sunday, four days before release. By Monday evening, the film had sold 8,164 tickets nationwide. As of October 1, 2025, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari has made a gross collection of Rs 1.4 crore with the sale of over 36,000 tickets. The film is expected to open with a collection of Rs 2.56 crore in India. Kantara: Chapter 1, on the other hand, has already earned over Rs 18 crore via advance booking.
According to trade experts, Kantara: Chapter 1 is expected to outperform Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari at the box office. However, Varun Dhawan has acknowledged the competition and stated that there is space for both films. He said that Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra is a very big date, and two films can really do big business.
