A Manipur Police convoy was attacked by a mob in the Chandel district of Manipur on Wednesday night, October 1, 2025. The incident occurred in Longja village, and several vehicles were damaged.
According to officials, the convoy was obstructed by a group of Kuki women who stood in front of the vehicles, preventing them from advancing. Shortly after, a mob launched an attack on the convoy. Windshields of some police vehicles were damaged, including one belonging to the Additional Superintendent of Police of the Chandel district. While there were no reports of injuries, the incident has further heightened tensions in the region.
The attack occurred amidst ongoing ethnic strife between the Kuki and Meitei communities that has plagued Manipur since May 2023. The clashes have resulted in at least 260 deaths and displaced thousands of people. The state is currently under President's Rule.
Kuki organizations have repeatedly accused the Manipur Police of being biased towards the Meitei community, which has deepened mistrust in the region.
In response to the attack, authorities have tightened security in sensitive areas of the state and urged the public to remain calm. An investigation is currently underway to identify those responsible for the attack.
In other developments, Manipur Police have arrested two individuals involved in arson and a mob attack on security personnel that occurred on Tuesday in the Yumnam Patlou Awang Leikai areas of the Imphal East district. The arrested individuals have been identified as Konjengbam Nanao alias Arunjit, 21, and Heikrujam Khamba Meitei, 43, both residents of Imphal East. Security forces also arrested a self-styled corporal of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) militant outfit.
The Manipur Police have appealed to the public to not believe rumors and to be wary of false videos. They have also cautioned that uploading and circulating fake posts on social media will attract legal action. The police have urged people to return looted arms, ammunition, and explosives to the police or the nearest security forces post immediately. Recovered arms include a 9 mm SMG carbine with magazine, five single-barrel rifles, one double-barrel gun, five pistols, five pompi guns, two 12-bore shotguns, a modified .303 sniper rifle with lens, and an M-16 automatic rifle with magazine. Security forces have also recovered a large cache of various types of ammunition and explosives, including Chinese grenades.
