Small town India punches above its weight: Home to billionaires and a titan of industry.

Ahmedabad, a Tier 2 city in Gujarat, is emerging as a significant hub for wealth creation in India. The city is home to Gautam Adani, the second richest man in India, and boasts a growing number of billionaires, surpassing established metropolitan cities like Kolkata and Pune.

According to the Hurun India Rich List 2025, Ahmedabad houses 16 billionaires, securing the sixth position among Indian cities with the highest number of billionaires. This puts it ahead of business-heavy cities such as Pune, Noida, and Gurugram, as well as metro cities like Kolkata. In comparison, Kolkata has three billionaires, while Pune and Hyderabad each have four.

Mumbai leads the list with 33 billionaires, followed by Delhi with 20 and Bengaluru with 10.

Ahmedabad's economic strength is rooted in its thriving manufacturing sector. Many of the city's billionaires have their origins in manufacturing businesses. The presence of prominent figures like Gautam Adani, Hasmukh Chudgar, Karsanbhai Patel, and Pankaj Patel further solidifies Ahmedabad's position as a key economic center.

India's economic landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, with wealth increasingly concentrated in major urban centers. Mumbai has overtaken Beijing as Asia's top city for billionaires. As of 2024, India has 271 billionaires, and their combined wealth accounts for approximately 7% of the total global wealth. In 2023, India added 94 new billionaires, second only to the United States.

The rise of Ahmedabad as a billionaire hub reflects this broader trend of economic growth and wealth creation in India's Tier 2 cities. While Mumbai remains the wealthiest city in India, Ahmedabad's growth in billionaire numbers signals the increasing economic diversification and the rise of new centers of wealth across the country.
