Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, 21, has revealed his plans for the international break after being omitted from Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the upcoming matches against Wales and Latvia. Despite his consistent performances for Crystal Palace, which are currently enjoying a 19-match unbeaten run, Wharton was not included in the 24-man squad.
Wharton, who had to withdraw from the previous squad due to an adductor injury, was expected by many to be reinstated for the October internationals. However, England manager Thomas Tuchel opted to stick with the same team that secured wins over Andorra and Serbia.
In a mature response to the snub, Wharton revealed that he is not "too fussed" about the decision. Instead of dwelling on the disappointment, he plans to use the time off to visit his grandparents. "That's football, I'm not too fussed about that," Wharton stated. "I can take the time off, go see my grandparents, and it's not the end of the world, as there's another camp next month".
Tuchel contacted Wharton to explain his decision, acknowledging the player's good form and stating that he deserved a place in the squad. "He just gave me a message saying I'm playing well, I'm close and I deserve to be there, but he's going to stick with the same team," Wharton shared.
Wharton's focus remains firmly on his performances for Crystal Palace. "I'm just focusing on Crystal Palace and playing well, and hopefully, if I play well, I'll get the call," he said. He considers an England call-up a bonus, with his priority being to contribute to his club's success. "It's nice to hear, but I think my focus is on Palace and if that goes well, then England is just a bonus," Wharton added.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner believes Wharton's omission from the England squad could be a "blessing in disguise". He feels the extra recovery time will be beneficial for the player, especially with the team's tight schedule and many games to play. "Then we try to do the best of it and so Adam will have a few days to rest, that is also good for him," Glasner said.
Wharton also expressed his support for Oliver Glasner, urging Crystal Palace to retain the manager. He highlighted the positive impact Glasner has had on the team since his arrival.
Looking ahead, Wharton is determined to continue his impressive form for Crystal Palace. With several games before the next international break in November, he has ample opportunities to impress Tuchel and stake his claim for a future England call-up. "I can't sit here and cry about it, this is football and I'm happy playing for Palace and getting minutes and trying to do as well as I can and improve and if I get picked, I get picked. If not, I'll carry on playing for Palace and enjoying it – there's nothing else I can do really," Wharton said.
