India is sending two multi-party delegations of parliamentarians to represent the nation at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. These "non-official" delegations, as described by an MP, aim to represent the Indian democracy and its united stance on global issues rather than strictly representing the State.
The first delegation, led by BJP MP P P Chaudhary, will be in New York from October 8 to October 14. This group comprises 15 members, including Anil Baluni, Nishikant Dubey, and Ujjwal Nikam from the BJP, Vivek Tankha and Kumari Selja from the Congress, Rajeev Rai from the Samajwadi Party, and N K Premachandran from the RSP, among others.
The second delegation, headed by BJP MP Daggubati Purandeswari, will be present from October 27. This delegation includes V D Sharma, Dilip Saikia, and Rekha Sharma from the BJP, Manoj Kumar Jha from RJD, P Wilson from DMK, G K Vasan from TMC(M), and Sandeep Kumar Pathak from AAP, among others.
Daggubati Purandeswari stated that the UNGA serves as a vital platform for member nations to discuss important global issues such as peace and security, human rights, development, and international cooperation, and she looks forward to representing India and contributing to these deliberations. Rajeev Rai, a Samajwadi Party MP, mentioned that he would be a part of the delegation with the permission of his leadership and emphasized that this platform would allow them to raise national and international issues, keeping the nation's interests supreme.
These delegations reflect India's ongoing tradition of parliamentary participation at the UNGA, engaging in discussions on various global issues and showcasing India's democratic voice on the international stage.
