Jarell Quansah focused on Leverkusen progress while dreaming of an England debut and international future.

Jarell Quansah is eager to make his mark at Bayer Leverkusen and break into the England national team. The 22-year-old defender, who recently moved from Liverpool to the Bundesliga club, is aiming to gain regular playing time to accelerate his development and realize his potential.

Quansah's transfer to Bayer Leverkusen for a reported £35 million came after he found his opportunities limited at Liverpool, where he made 58 senior appearances. Despite being a part of the Reds' squad that won the Premier League title in 2024 under Arne Slot, Quansah sought a fresh start to secure consistent game time. He started just four Premier League games last season and was substituted at halftime in Slot's first competitive match, further motivating his decision to move abroad.

"I just wanted to keep progressing," Quansah stated. "As a young centre-back, you need games to improve." He acknowledged the valuable experience he gained training alongside top players at Liverpool but emphasized the importance of consistent playing time at this stage of his career. "I'm 22, turning 23 (in January), I'm going to be needing hundreds of games to be where I want to be at the end of the day," Quansah added. He believes that playing regularly in the Bundesliga and the Champions League will significantly contribute to his growth.

The move to Bayer Leverkusen has provided Quansah with the opportunity to play Champions League football and test himself at the highest level. Since joining the club, he has featured in all of their competitive fixtures this season. He aims to build on his success in the Under-21 Euros and establish himself as a key player for Leverkusen.

Quansah's performances at the club level have kept him in contention for a call-up to the England national team. Although he was included in Gareth Southgate's provisional squad for Euro 2024, he has yet to make his senior international debut. He has been a part of every England camp since Thomas Tuchel took over as manager, with the exception of June when he was helping England win the Under-21 European Championship.

Quansah has represented England at various youth levels, including the Under-16s, Under-17s, Under-18s, Under-19s, Under-20s, and Under-21s. He played a crucial role in England's victory at the 2022 UEFA U-19 European Championship, scoring the winning goal in the semi-final against Italy. He was also a member of the England squad that won the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

Before joining Bayer Leverkusen, Quansah gained senior experience on loan at Bristol Rovers in League One. He described his debut for the club, a 5-1 defeat to Morecambe, as an "eye-opener".

Eligible to play for England, Scotland, Ghana, and Barbados through his grandparents, Quansah's focus remains on performing well for Bayer Leverkusen and earning his first senior England cap. He hopes his move to Germany will help him achieve his ambitions and solidify his place as a top-level defender.
