Bengaluru: Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, 92, has been shifted to a ward at Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru, after being admitted for treatment of an infection. He was admitted to the hospital on Monday night after complaining of discomfort.
Deve Gowda was initially admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after developing a high fever and chills due to a urinary tract infection (UTI). His son-in-law, Dr. C.N. Manjunath, who is also a Bengaluru Rural MP, stated that Mr. Deve Gowda's renal parameters were deranged and required hospital care.
The hospital released a statement on Tuesday, confirming that the former Prime Minister was admitted with an infection and is undergoing medical management. A team of medical experts is closely monitoring his progress.
Dr. Sudarshan Ballal, Chairman of Manipal Hospitals, informed that Deve Gowda is now in stable condition and is expected to be shifted to the ward within a day or two. Doctors have conducted a series of tests as a precautionary measure and have reiterated that there is no cause for concern. They added that specialists are continuously monitoring Gowda's condition. Sources indicate he is expected to be discharged over the weekend.
Deve Gowda, a prominent figure in Karnataka politics for over seven decades and a Rajya Sabha member, remains active in politics. His hospitalisation has prompted visits from family members and senior Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S) ) leaders. The JD(S) is currently a key ally of the BJP in the state and part of the ruling BJP-led NDA at the Centre.
Despite his age, Deve Gowda has been a vocal supporter of the current BJP-led NDA government. Last month, he lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for "actively pursuing alternatives" following the United States' "unreasonable and unjust" tariff war, emphasizing that a policy of "multi-alignment" would offer rich dividends.
