UK-India Collaboration: Prime Minister Starmer and Yash Raj Films Partner to Boost Bollywood Presence in Britain.

Bollywood is gearing up for a grand return to British soil, as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a significant collaboration with Yash Raj Films (YRF). The agreement will see three major YRF productions filmed across the United Kingdom starting early 2026. This initiative is projected to generate over 3,000 jobs and inject millions of pounds into the British economy.

Starmer made the announcement during his trade mission to Mumbai, India, where he visited Yash Raj Studios. The visit coincided with the studio's 20th anniversary celebrations on October 12. The Prime Minister's delegation included representatives from prominent British film organizations such as the British Film Institute (BFI), British Film Commission, Pinewood Studios, Elstree Studios, and Civic Studios. During his visit, Starmer met with actor Rani Mukerji and toured the studio, gaining insight into the filmmaking process.

"Bollywood is back in Britain, and it's bringing jobs, investment and opportunity, all while showcasing the UK as a world-class destination for global filmmaking," Starmer stated. He emphasized that this partnership exemplifies the potential of the UK-India trade deal, fostering growth, strengthening cultural bonds, and benefiting communities throughout the UK.

YRF's return to filming in the UK marks a significant moment, as the studio has a history of shooting iconic films in the country, including "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" (DDLJ). The CEO of Yash Raj Films, Akshaye Widhani, expressed the deep connection the studio has with the UK, noting that some of their most beloved films were filmed there. Widhani also mentioned that YRF is currently producing an English stage adaptation of DDLJ in the UK, titled "Come Fall in Love".

The UK has long been a popular destination for Bollywood filmmakers, with its iconic landmarks and diverse landscapes providing stunning backdrops for numerous films. London, in particular, has served as a backdrop for Bollywood movies like "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham", "Namastey London", and "Jab Tak Hai Jaan". Kent has also served as a filming location for Bollywood productions. Popular spots include Trafalgar Square, Tower Bridge and the London Eye.

The collaboration between YRF and the UK government is expected to further strengthen the creative relationship between the two countries. UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy welcomed the partnership, highlighting its potential to drive growth in the UK's creative industries. A new cooperation agreement between the BFI and India's National Film Development Corporation is also in the works to promote co-productions and cultural exchange.

This initiative follows a cultural cooperation agreement signed in May and the landmark UK-India trade deal signed in July, which aims to lower tariffs, improve market access, and increase bilateral trade. The delegation accompanying Starmer on his trade mission included 125 members, including CEOs, entrepreneurs, and cultural leaders.

Yash Raj Films' decision to film three major productions in the UK is a testament to the country's world-class infrastructure, technology, and talent. As Bollywood returns to Britain, it promises to bring a wave of jobs, investment, and opportunities, further solidifying the UK's position as a global filmmaking hub.
