The Mumbai and Maharashtra Cricket Associations have launched a joint investigation into a heated altercation between Prithvi Shaw and Musheer Khan during a recent red-ball practice match. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday during a warm-up fixture ahead of the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season, has prompted the Mumbai Cricket Association to seek the expertise of Dilip Vengsarkar, who will personally look into the matter.
According to reports, the clash took place after Shaw, playing for Maharashtra, was dismissed while attempting a slog sweep off Khan's bowling. Allegedly, Khan sledged Shaw with a "Thank you" send-off, which infuriated the former Mumbai player. Witnesses claim that Shaw responded by allegedly grabbing Khan by the collar and attempting to strike him with his bat.
While Maharashtra captain Ankit Bawne downplayed the incident, stating that "Such things happen. It's all okay now and there is no issue," both cricket associations are taking the matter seriously. The associations have condemned the players' behavior and aim to understand the circumstances that led to the confrontation.
Mumbai Cricket Association secretary Abhay Hadap stated that the selection committee will discuss the incident and receive a report. Dilip Vengsarkar, as an advisor, will speak to both players to gather more information. Similarly, the Maharashtra Cricket Association's secretary, Adv. Kamlesh Pisal, confirmed that they would also question Shaw and Khan after receiving a detailed report.
Vengsarkar emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline and sportsmanship. "If something is found, action will be taken as per the rules and regulations," he stated. He added that such incidents tarnish the image of the game and set a bad example for aspiring cricketers.
Prithvi Shaw, who recently switched from Mumbai to Maharashtra, had earlier showcased his form by scoring 111 against Chhattisgarh in the Buchi Babu tournament and 181 in the Ranji Trophy warm-up match against Mumbai. Despite his talent, Shaw's career has been marred by controversies, including a past accusation of molesting a social media influencer. The current investigation adds another layer of scrutiny to the young cricketer's career.
Musheer Khan is considered a promising all-rounder. The outcome of the investigation could have implications for both players' careers and their participation in upcoming tournaments. The Mumbai and Maharashtra Cricket Associations are expected to release a statement with their findings and any disciplinary actions taken once the investigation is complete.
